Simon Andersson
Talkin' Bout A Revolution Swedish singing sensation Simon Andersson has been described as the next big thing from this part of the world. He's been totally musical since he was a young boy and with a love of performance, it didn't take long before Simon Andersson became highly proficient and talented. Recently, he won the Best Country Song of the Year in the Hollywood Music in Media Awards. Now we get to hear his version of this classic Tracy Chapman song, setting the target even higher than before. It opens with a haunting piano melody that spans out to encompass Simon Andersson's voice. The familiar words ring out to the time of the tempo rich keys, backed up by subtle drums. New percussion sneaks in by the end of th verse and the rhythm becomes intense. Then it hits us, a distorted electric guitar strikes a chord which glides across the music. New drums with powerful hits snap and crack as the piano and voice continue with ever more pressure. The rock n roll simmers down for a moment to let the song build up again. Fantastic energy and soaring vocals bring us towards a sense of future hope. Allan James
Our Dreams Since having his own TV show about guitars in Iceland while temporarily living there, Allan James has become a monument of music and talent. He's fronted several bands, released six albums to date, and now is making huge gains in ultra-modern forms of music media. This self-taught musician has been working on his skills since single figures and was already a performance veteran by his 20s. We can always expect great things from this polymath of music. The song begins with a guitar melody, strummed and plucked notes warble and waver together in a sea of sound. Drums roll in with a funky rock tempo before Allan James begins to sing. His crisp voice harmonises with itself across the expanse of music brought to us by layers of quality guitar. Punchy lines mix with steady catchy chord progressions while harmony and lyric quaver along the emotive shiver lines. Then, during the middle eight, a harmonica breaks free from the wall of sound. A short burst of melody gives the sense of a breather, which of course for Allan James is anything but. The song drifts along in a slow moving lava of hot and viscous sound. Blues guitar then spills over to form yet another brief piece of music, breaking up the vocals. There's a feeling of Arbouretum with the style, a slight country edge to classic rock gives a character we can all enjoy. Tony As
Tomorrow Oge Beats Alternative Fruit is back in London to get an earful of Tony As and his latest single. Since the big success of his earlier video which entered into Sierra Leone's top ten music charts, and received press from us, the ex-teacher is back with yet more intelligent singing and rap. He's known for writing about the daily grind, relationships and the dynamics of social life. Strings and drums twang and strike in a reggae style while Tony begins to sing. His silken lines droop across the warmth like altar cloth, Tony As sings about the hope for tomorrow. We can keep working, keep praying, keep our head up high, and the rest has to be left to chance. Does God operate in the realm of luck? LaGzz
Zero From Eponymous EP Formed in Nuremberg during a crazy 2015, the name is pronounced Lags and represents L.A. Germany and London. The sleeping city? This duo of electronic music makers now live in sunny Brighton. Priding themselves in a back catalogue of incredible festival appearances and live dates, their fans are eagerly snapping up listens of the new single. Released as a taster of the eponymous Zero EP, those in the know and those about to find out can all get a glimpse of what awaits our ears. The track begins on a wobbly synthesiser which builds in volume until a bassline and drum add their percussive dancing flow. The music builds with subtle progression, then a vocal-line streams through the network of open ended beats. Like a sports car, we glide across luminous night roads while city lights shoot by, each one representing a bubble of human life. A guitar riff spills over with a chord melody to allow the music to raise the bar and pressure. As synths break down the drums into a tranquil reservoir of sound, a bluesy solo shines over the digital framework. Lyrics return with the onset of beats which allow the track to build again before it closes. Boudica
Different Today (Featuring Letty Grover) The Queen of the Iceni lives on in the soul of this Bedfordshire bassist and songwriter. Always showing up with another member of the music scene, picked for some unnamable quality no doubt, Boudica brings on the feel of the 60s and 70s through the guise of soulful rock. Natalie Jane and her tribe of passionate composers and stage studs release a brand new single called Different Today. Uplifting vocals and springy guitar open the song on a double lined groove. Feeling good and loving life seems to be the theme of the day. But today, everything seems different. Where has the loving glow gone? Where is the confidence and optimism that everyone admires? Perhaps it's being sapped away by the reality of truth or maybe it's just a simple bout of fatigue. It's okay to not be up and feeling our best, it takes a lot of energy to be so buoyant day after day. The song is happy and thoughtful, it asks the questions about what could be the matter and reminds us of how it could be - if we could only let go of our troubles. Christopher Taylor
With You Life's Beautiful We're back in Yorkshire to pay a visit to award winning pop-rocker Christopher Taylor. Since featuring on Alternative Fruit previously, he's worked to bring us yet more of his trademark heart-warming sounds. So many radio stations have featured Taylor's music and continue to do so, he's even been played on the BBC. The star of the show who's in the know continues to woo us with his music. A jumpy intro with happy up-beat chords and drumming tears the silence open to let the song in. Similar vibes to REM (signed stuff) give an uplifting and melodic verse full of catchy lines. Christopher Taylor sings in happy and optimistic tones, there's a chorus and it leaps from the stereo like a flock of bluebirds. We're asked to let him in, give him a chance, because for Christopher Taylor, it means everything. Devotion and beauty, some inner awakening brings a peace and clarity to the meaning of love.
