What a guy! Despite having a gruelling day job as a hard grafting builder, Simon Wilby has been secretly honing his songwriting skills. Now with a few years of practice and experience behind him, this handy home-maker is ready to show us what he's got. It's about time, let's listen to him and see what he's all about. This latest output is called A List. He looks good to me already, with a guitar in his hand extremely similar to one of mine.
The music begins, a delicate plucked chord melody strikes a tune. Stepping notes wander up and down the fingerings in joyous and thoughtful dances. Simon Wilby starts singing within a bar or two and he instantly sits on the sentimental side. His voice emotes and breaks across the notes like a work of art, everything feels right. The melody swirls across time honoured folk songs and new, fresh ideas. Simon brings the composition into the next gear. His chords push onward and tell the emotional story of his lyrics. Now with abstract clarity, the music tells the tale in a tidal flow of timing and musical paragraph. I'm reminded of work by Bert Jansch of Pentangle fame.
