Sophie Bae - Boy | Alternative Fruit

Sophie Bae
Sophie Bae
Boy

Sophie was just an infant when she discovered a love for song and dance. This early spark has led her down a path which has seen her win the Open Mic UK Competition. Already a vocal coach with a great sense of style, the award winning songwriter found herself scouted by SAFO Music. They've helped her even further to make music that sounds great on the radio. With her new single, titled Boy, many of us are getting their first magical taste of Sophie Bae.

A tuneful piano melody sprawls out across the sheets as the music unravels before us. Sophie has a bluesy emotive voice that dances across the harmonies. Rhythm kicks in after the first verse and a catchy chorus pushes us into a higher gear. Clever lyrics with neat drumming combine with expressive composition to create a song that's full of hooks and potential actions. I can see troops of young women synchronising their moves to this number.

Margot White
Face To Face

Born in Texas and now living in London where she studies music at Goldsmith's University, Margot White is making sounds that already reach so many. She discovered a love and talent for poetry as a young child, and after a brief flirtation with athletics, Margot took an artistic path. We're all thrilled that she did, as her brand of jazz and wordplay have given us all something to enjoy. Her specific mix of influences have recently focused themselves into a stunning electronica EP. Face To Face is a first glimpse at the wider work, a single that's on the radio all over the world.

It opens with a deep, throbbing bass melody. Margot's silky voice drips and then pours across the riverbed of sound. Seductive sounding breaths with metaphorical and psychologically evocative lyrics wrap like delicate and vibrant fabrics. A steady groove pushes the music forward as progressions of intensity wave across a story of words. A moving surge of chorus returns again and again in between moody and close up interludes.

Denzel - Jungle | Alternative Fruit

Denzel Jungle
Denzel
Jungle

Growing up in London and witnessing the hard reality of knife-crime first hand has pushed Denzel into enlightened circles. He understood early on that the lack of opportunity plus mistrust of authority at school and home leads to wayward youth. When all we want to do is fulfil our image of a model person and the standard templates make us feel uncomfortable, we naturally fall into one of the deviations. Rather than adopting a cultural deviation only, many young people turn to behavioural ones too. Knives have consequences that transcend the trial and error principle. When someone is seriously hurt or killed then it's not enough to simply change our behaviour. Denzel has made a big effort to create a force for good among the people who risk losing their way. His track Jungle reaches out and offers his light to the gloom. The consequences of this track can only be positive.

It opens with melodic chimes in a looping phrase. Percussive beats start pounding through the tune to bring a skipping dancing tempo. Denzel starts singing, his rap/singing style leaps from each genre with catchy lines. Rhythm and rhyme combine in a swinging spin through beats, bass, and melodic bounce. Close to the heart, it has lines about life as a young adult making the most out of the opportunity and people around us, it's a drama and a journey.

Tammy B Breathe U
Tammy B
Breathe U

Since writing her first song when she was only thirteen, Tammy B had every intention to take it all the way. Raised in a strictly religious home, a rebellious streak soon emerged to help her find musical direction. Since being featured on Alternative Fruit earlier this year, Tammy B has enjoyed a great reception and put her all into this brand new release. Breathe U wants to explore the complexities of new relationships and how they affect our lives.

Piano and effect bring the intro in with a smooth glide out of the silence. Tammy B starts singing, her voice bounces along the rhythms with melodic clarity. Soulful meaning and composition work hand-in-hand while slow and seductive beats pound in under-section. A dream-pop sense of sleepy euphoria washes the music with glowing vibes while a story-line of words take us through love's emotions.

Don't Say I Didn't Warn You
From Strange Ways

Previously The Little Devils, a run of line-up changes resulted in a new band name. This London based group of blues rockers have been enjoying a succession of live shows since the release of their new album. A truly international bunch of talents, UK, Sweden, Spain, and the USA all have representation in this super-group. The London 100 Club recently held an exclusive party to celebrate the launch of Strange Ways, which is available to stream and buy. Listen in the car or in the auditorium, the music manages to fill the space with exceptional quality. Don't Say I Didn't Warn You is the single from the album, the track that radio loves right now, and the composition in review for you today.

A catchy minimal guitar riff opens the music. It's distorted with an open ended warmth and carries a Guns n Roses style vibe. Drums and bass kick in to bring the energy up to full speed while a strong female vocal slinks across the bars with absolute style. Rhythmic verse lines and pushy guitars keep the moves in action while perfect elocution allows us to listen intently to what they have to say. It's a punchy and aggressive song that remains true to the rock n roll vibe which sits comfortably on the ears. Fun and catchy composition makes the song easy to listen to, great to dance to, and for those who can play, a good inspiration too.

Since moving to Australia from Nigeria in 2006, Ray Ramon has made a big name for himself with his music. Touching on inspirations from Michael Jackson plus a whole host of modern sounds, Ray Ramon's dance tunes are winning awards and gaining massive radio play around the world. Previously featured on Alternative Fruit with Make That Move, we're all looking forward to hearing this new single.

The music begins with a thumping and spiky bass beat. A great build with vocals and cymbal bring the music to full speed as chord synths add harmony. Ray sings in a rhythmic and melodic style that jingles around the catchy beats. Keyboard melody takes over, lifting the energy of the track into a new high. Love song lyrics frame a happy and energetic number that pretty much demands that we get up and move, It's memorable and accessible with plenty of original class.

JDXL Lowkey | Alternative Fruit

JDXL
Lowkey

A professional pianist since the age of fifteen, John-Daniel Powell now has his own radio show. This studio knowledge has given JDXL the ability to record and mix his own album, On The Lowkey. Working with Creative and Dreams, this Tennessee electronic music producer seems to always land on his feet. Landing a record deal after falling off a roof into the laps of his producers is not even half of this guy's amazing story. Now aged 23, he's more than ready to let the world in on his fresh sounds.

With synthwave vibes that span out like a retro computer game environment, funky beats lap the shores lined with thudding bass. Melodic sections repeat and rise in pitch, unveiling more harmonies with each pass of the stylus. A deep and throaty vocal reminiscent of goth music chants the name of the track in a catchy rhythmic growl. New voice is added with a strong vocoder element, shifting the tone into a digital frenzy of representation. Upbeat and dancing rhythms pin together an inventive and motivating composition that pushes us into the next gear.

Leon Marshall Chain-Smoking | Alternative Fruit

Leon Marshall
Chain-Smoking

While driving home to Harrogate from Edinburgh, Leon Marshall wrote this song. A professional singer already, Leon has been on the BBC and recently reached the semi-finals of a national singing competition. Perhaps more used to singing songs written by someone else, it takes a lot of guts to push out the boat and stand on your own deck.

With a bendy guitar melody, summertime rain lashes down in the form of static. A happy and light touch drum-beat matches the strumming pattern. Leon sings, his melody has a bouncy and uplifting vibe which evolves across the moving composition. The song speaks of chain-smoking, the portioned moments where we sort out our mind and assess the previous moments. Sometimes those moments stretch back for years and years. Where our mind knows we are missing a point or forgetting who we really are.

Laurel Smith Bonnie To Your Clyde | Alternative Fruit

Bonnie To Your Clyde

Growing up in a family home that often enjoyed the sounds of The Police and Pink Floyd gave Laurel a great taste in music. Since this early time, she's learned her trade and has begun making her own modern sounds. She wrote her first song at aged twelve, and now she's sixteen there's a whole EP of fresh material waiting in the wings. Mortals EP stands ready to burst onto the scene, and her single Bonnie To Your Clyde is out now.

With moody synthesiser and the sound of a police car, the music opens with a journeying vocal. Laurel Smith begins to sing. Her voice reaches into the high notes with athletic quality while her groovy and smooth pace fits snugly in the percussion. The song is about losing love, the risk of becoming dependent on another person to complete us. It's perhaps something we want because other people seem happy, like the final chapter of everyone's book, our psychology wants us to find someone to devote to. Bonnie To Your Clyde reminds us that life is never so simple.
