Pretty Gritty
Seven Year Itch
Independent/Creative And Dreams
Released 30th March 2018

Following from a hectic touring schedule of the United States, Pretty Gritty took to the Helsinki South Studios in their home town of Tennessee to record the album Seven Year Itch. Having an EP under their belts already, called Lonely Road, the musical duo and friends have established a unique folk rock sound. With comparisons made to the Everly Brothers, the concoction of vocals from this male/female pair creates a soulful and aspiring tone.

The album begins with a ballad named “If I Were A Carpenter”, describing how societal status can't get in the way of love. The male vocals of Blaine Heinonen kick start the piece, and they're soon joined by the harmonising tones of Sarah Wolff. It's a calm and melodic poem that tells a story of positivity and togetherness. As it finishes just before the three minute mark, a little more energy is added to the mix with “Bone To Pick”. A country and western rhythm section brings on an atmosphere of hay barns and sunsets. The lyrics have attitude and spell out a no nonsense attitude to being together. With a line about whiskey and a bouncy guitar riff, the album shows us that it's got a life to lead as well as feelings to feel.

A rock and roll influenced number follows, there's still a country element to the vocal delivery however the track feels like something by the Rolling Stones. It's got a storyline with a dynamic plot which is kept together by a catchy and upbeat chorus. “Coming Loose” explores claustrophobia within the self, taking the high road in life and losing out on what's below. An acoustic melody opens “Love Don't Live Here Anymore”, it's a sad song with wistful lines of acceptance. An accompaniment of pedal steel can be heard in the distance, alongside blues style electric guitar.

The album explores various perspectives of love, and how it can make us feel. The songs each take a unique view on the phenomenon that brings people together. A harmonising style between the vocalists and a simple guitar basis for the songs give a steady and relaxed feel to the album. The style of music brings in various aspects, sounds like tingles continuously reverberate through the progressions and words. Without being like anything else in particular, familiar vibes keep the lights on at home. The progressions of intensity and tempo build and fall gently, tracks like “Every Road” with a grunge style punch sit back to back with other numbers that dig up country roots on the other side of the fence.
