London based AOR band Hats Off Gentlemen It's Adequate stand proudly by their next studio album. Since the success of Broken But Still Standing, the group have worked on this new release culminating in even more interesting stories and ideas put to music. The band likes to go deep into things, not a shallow brush over the ephemeral aspects of existence, Hats Off take their time to divulge and discover tangents and ideas that make the songs truly worthwhile. We do need more than just a catchy song to really make our mark, after-all. Composing electronic sounds and rock music together is not always easy, both styles have unique directions and reasons to listen to. Finding the common ground in these two sound exploratory areas has been important for Hats Off, now with this new work it's clear that a lot of graft and experimentation has rendered this professional and enjoyable sound.

Stand Up was written as a moral issue song, it's about not staying silent when we see injustice. Sometimes we have to be the devil's advocate and stick up for the principles of justice and truth even when the subject matter isn't from our familial patch. When people around us make negative remarks for no good reason or without substantial evidence then we may become unpopular for speaking up however history will remember the truth and the hysteria as separate entities. Other times, we may be in a situation where we ourselves are made to stand up for when others around us just want to stick their blades and feet in. Both times require strength.  The song begins with a keyboard and flute melody which is bumped up by ruckus guitars behind them.  Powerfully spoken and sung vocals describe the scene, it's time for us to Stand Up. It's catchy and strong, the music keeps everything pinned into place while emotional words try to stretch and pull the shapes further into their positions.

The second single on the double A release is When I Was A Ship. Based on the ideas written by novelist Ann Leckie. She described a story situation in which a warship has an AI mind. This was spread out over the ship and within prisoners who had their minds wiped. Now that the ship is destroyed and the crew and prisoners gone, only one person remains who still has the AI inside them. The story dives in from here, and this song makes a perfect appetiser for it. Exploring the literary world with music is really worthwhile, not only does it link the art with other art, it helps to validate and propel both ideas into further waters. Piano and softly sung words make this a more thoughtful number. Sadness creeps in through the bars during the brief minor notes while the familiar voice  of Malcolm Galloway tells the story and the feelings behind it.

There is a real Genesis feel in the music, with the prog-rock attitude and the musical capabilities merging to form a brilliant composition. Flow works well through the whole album, the surge of energy is funnelled and lensed more than adequately. WE as listeners can enjoy this release like a well made film, albeit without the motion pictures, we're gladly strung along the line while Hats Off give us a great musical experience full of originality and intrigue.
