Close Eyes, Deep Breath, Run EP
Out 11th December

Fresh off the presses, the debut Fires EP is finally here and ready for you to enjoy. This Irish group of independent and hard-working musicians have put together a release which includes their three highly-acclaimed singles, Dream, Forgotten Sons, and All For This. Inspired by bands such as Slaves, Rise Against, and Fightstar, Fires write songs with deep and meaningful content. Having been described as intelligent and selective, it's clear this band are headed for great things.

It starts with Fizzy Lifting Drinks. A swish of vibrant guitar forms bubbling tones around sweeping synthesiser sounds. String melody begins to dance in ribbon-like patters in gusty drafts. Then, a vocal sample creates a distinctive post-rock atmosphere. An anger rises, a horrible voice begins ranting the listener, forgetting all sense of courtesy. The guitar rages and drums pound as the emotions topple like spilled Jenga towers. The human spirit is set ablaze in a fire of animalistic passion.

Next, a guitar riff smashes into the silence left behind. A rock beat slams in with frantic distortions as lyrics attempt to plead for understanding. I am not a monster to the sound of anger and rage in the music creates a paradox we are asked to appreciate. I will not survive this, apparently. Sounds pretty terrifying. The true colours are revealed as the song says yes, I am a monster. The guitar pounds on with drums smashing fills at every open opportunity. A repeating melody evolves with progressive bars that drive a heavy-metal edge with cutting delivery. All For This bangs on the door and demands to be let in.

Track three starts with a guitar lick that flowers into abstract gardens of distortion and blues. It settles on the horizon and just above the biosphere the blue touches green and here the song begins its story. A manic angst in the words is framed by fast progressions that chop and swivel on rock n roll pivots. We know this fire inside is burning us and those around us, maybe? We're suddenly alerted to the fact that justice is relative and we are not the centre. A slower and more tuneful selection of compositions in Change Your Mind create memorable structure that we can groove with.

Strange sounds build up from mysterious zones as science-fiction style feels wash across the intro of Dream. Deep and melodic vocals deliver a syrupy liquid sensation before howling guitar bursts into action. Sloping melodies create an avalanche that builds and shakes before breaking away from its friction and sliding down the mountain. Keyboard fills suddenly span outward in arpeggio-like reaches of scaled melody. Chords chug and resound in neat lines until close.

A breezy guitar riff with full-on blues and rock swagger opens the penultimate number. Frantic chord strikes in a punky rhythm open the verse as lyrics punch the air with their words. Forgotten Sons grabs at branches of frustration in order to lift up and overcome turbulence and turmoil. The epic desire to succeed elevates the will and empowers a forward direction to be worth remembering. Choppy riffs and rolling drums curdle and coil as the music keeps up with the bouncing crowd.

To finish, powerful chords crash along a simple rhythm as lyrics implore us to rise and meet our challenges. A Life Worth Living offers us a new direction and a place to be content with who we are. Do we take it or do we find more meaning in being meaningless and transient.

This album sounds like a progressive soundtrack for learning to handle anger once we become full-sized adults. It begins with an outburst and finishes on tempered and well-manicured focus that ultimately is an evolution of emotion.
