Marlae
Runaway Released just today, the stunning Marlae invites us to run away with her. A song about getting out of where-ever we are and finding somewhere new, this synth-pop groover takes a rich yet minimal approach to song-writing. The Dublin-based singer, known for her contralto voice, finds a comfy home within electronic beats and lush synthesiser. The song has a fantastic video made by the gifted Paul Dodd, who discovered Marlae and decided to reach out from his home in Australia. Recorded and mixed in Marlae's Templeogue home then mastered by Ben Rawlins, we as listeners are taken on a journey away from what-ever is troubling us. Sultry chimes paddle at the air with melodious scales and the voice of Marlae rises from the flow. Sweet and sensual vocals sweep like aromatic spring breezes across an expanse of poise. Moody chords vibrate and compose themselves in comfortable jibs that catch the moving air in embraces. Subtle notes filter out in between a pounding bassline which beats like a heart close to another's chest. A sensation of the 1980s grows from the choice of synthesiser, soulful and rounded notes bob like ducks on a choppy lake. As an emotional presence manifests in clarity through the words, a new layer of piano begins to strike a barrage of complimentary chords to the uplifting currents of energy, led by the effortless yet crowd-shuddering voice. PureGrand
Pictures TBR: 16th April This third single from the upcoming PureGrand EP, due out at the end of the year, takes a leaf from the work of 90s boy bands. With lyrics about dating in the modern world that explore how the rules have changed, this dance-pop ballad begins an important conversation. It's been years since I went on a date and with all this commotion about harassment and objectification I am not sure how to get one these days. If admiring a woman and making it known is offensive and frightening to them, how do you try to get together? I guess the time has come for women to do the asking. This track is looking at the problem from fresh young eyes and with a fanfare of media behind it. PureGrand has been featured Nialler9's Best New Acts 2020 and on Hot Press's Hot for 2021. What began in his bedroom as a do-it-yourself music and self-promotion adventure, the photographer and visual artist put music into the equation. Since then, PureGrand has played at many top venues around Dublin and beyond. With a passion to bring real pop music back to the top, and a video that turns him into an idol, the song is eagerly awaited by the youth of the day. Hook
Best Days The airwaves are just not the same when Hook are not playing so it's exciting to listen to their first release of 2021. Best Days is a song about youth, university, and what many say are the best days of our life. The song looks at this cliché and uncovers feelings of angst, loneliness, and exclusion. Unless you're particularly confident, making friends is difficult and there's no-one keen to make the effort with you. Singer-songwriter Eoin worked with drummer Morgan to craft this piece, both of whom hope that those days were not the best they'll have. The 80s new-wave alt-rock sound the band have fashioned and become known for is the perfect backdrop to this kind of composition. With a smash of distorted guitar, the music begins. Plucked chord shapes create a verse melody that progresses as the vocals enter. Drums scamper on the upbeat tempo as hats and kick meet snare in an easy-going rhythm. The music swells into an electric garden of notes and harmony as the chorus takes us into the sense of better things to come. A key tightness between instruments brings out true resonances that glow with expertly manicured fizz. A sing-a-long element makes it easy to follow and keep up with the repeating words while head-bopping tones keep the energy rising like smoke. Look out for Hook on Facebook and Instagram

This first release for the rising talent is astounding, and a proof of much more ability ready to be put into sound. The music begins with a vocal holler and some funky reggae chords. Strip n Roll
We Don't Need To From Keep It Real Out Now Formed in London when drummer Karl and vocalist Tom met up for a quick session, the rest of the band fell into place quickly after. The band have gone on to release several acclaimed titles and have reached fans from further and further afield. The reviews have been raving and the radio's been repeating, let's see the 60s and 70s reborn in this alternative rock outfit. It begins on a smash of cymbal and roar of guitars. The chord progression chugs along and reverberated organ wobbles in harmonious fringes. The vocal begins, a smooth distortion warms the sound, lyrics sing about society trying to make decisions for us. We don't need to do that. It can feel like our perspective is the only right one, but we have experienced a unique story and have gained insight in unique proportions. How can we accurately weigh things up in other peoples' lives? This catchy, Hawkwind like, and brilliantly produced track poses these philosophical conjectures.
