Why Look At Art Scientifically?
Art is meant for pleasure, expression, and release. So why take a materialistic lens to this out-laying of personality and humanity? A qualitative approach usually contains more than enough to enjoy. For many of us, the processes and effects can be seen as important tools for not only statespersonship but also for humanitarian and commercial uses. If we imagine the mind as a crucible in chemistry or society as a test-tube, when art enters the equation the end result is observable and often measurable. We are not foreign to this concept, we all know music is medicine and art helps us to form our own ideas. If we are able to change the way people think and feel by applying something they enjoy, imagine where we could take this? Furthermore, the near democratisation of media in the online realm has provided each of us with a route to add our own ingredients to the human cocktail. What are these scientific lenses and where do we start? These three specific doctrines are separate yet reliant on one another to complete. An understanding of one leads to an understanding of the other. Art Semiology What does it all mean? A work of art contains many things that can be intellectually mined from the raw material. The meaning of art is subject to our interpretations however there are many forms of general consensus that influence our understanding of what we see. The symbols and signs in a work of art can be nameable things that we all recognise or they can be abstractions such as contours and contrasts. The fact that it is a certain way when produced within a certain period of time by a particular person can lead to a wide array of extrapolative conjecture. A series of critiques and accepted interpretations then make up the meta-language of the piece, providing an atmosphere of language that conveys the human eye. Sociology Of Art What does this say about society? What did society say about this? The way communities consume and decipher art can be related to the state of the people at the time. Their mindsets, priorities, moral structures, and levels of education can be surmised by the identifiable and meaningful choices they make in the art world. We can also look at how art influences society in positive and negative ways. Some artworks become protagonists and others become antagonists. In the middle are plenty more which neither made waves or broke them. The reasons behind these choices can be a fascinating insight into the minds of those who make them. Sociology of the Arts: Exploring Fine and Popular Forms Art Psychology What does it do? How is the work affecting us and the general population by being what it is? A deeper look into the workings of the human mind can allow us to determine how a particular image or palette, a sound or a rhythm, can alter the way we think and feel mechanically. Our bodies are made of chemical reactions and these are influenced by the things we see, feel, and think. All the mind is a free-flowing entity of energy within you and the energy of art in its many forms can directly influence this flow of life. Words, pictures, sounds, and textures can all enter our awareness and send conscious and subconscious signals to the source of what makes us think.
