Love Coffee

Most of us enjoy drinking coffee, some of us like to drink it everyday. It's a world favourite and each culture has its own way of preparing great coffee, be it in a cup, mug, bowl, or jug. For example, since its introduction to India by a Holy man who smuggled it in from Mecca in the 16th Century, fresh coffee is brewed very slowly giving it a potent and lip smacking taste. It's often enjoyed with sugar and milk, all the same. The Cubans are known for mixing the sugar in while it is brewing, bad luck for those who don't like it sweet eh? The iced coffee is becoming wide spread around the world, popularised by the American coffee chains which open everywhere, their standard is reaching drinkers everywhere, but if you thought that was strange then you've not been to Japan, where coffee is served in cans like cola.

We've mostly all seen those little love hearts or Irish shamrocks artistically sketched onto our latte but nowadays, they go a bit further than that. In some places, the staff are expected to produce miniature masterpieces which no doubt are due to be disturbed, unravelled and eventually destroyed as their foundation of liquid is supped sumptuously by the glamorous beverage connoisseur behind the china rim. It doesn't stop there either, coffee grinds themselves, the ground roasted beans which we know can be a medium for creating images, many of which celebrate their origins.

Perhaps the most coffee is taken in the Western world, i.e. Europe, Australia and America and this might be a good thing for us as coffee is also well known to be full of antioxidants. Although carrying caffeine, which in high quantities can be a problem for us, antioxidants present in coffee help our bodies to clean up after toxic exposure such as smoking, sitting in traffic or eating red meat.

But where is it from, where did this coffee thing all begin? The seeds which we commonly refer to as beans are from the coffea plant which is native to sub tropical Africa. As many accept the theory than humans also arrived from here, it makes sense that this delicious and invigorating drink has a hand hold on us around the world today. Even now, in this modern world of digital markets and international consumerism, the humble green coffee bean, pre-roasted and fresh from the plant is one of the most traded items, exported from over 70 countries which grow it today.
