With Vilest of Worms to Dwell Napalm Records 2001 Find on Amazon Find on Amazon UK Symphonic Austrian death metal from the turn of the millennium, impregnated with swing and timeless energies that sit slightly under the surface of heavy, thrashing, and cut-throat guitars. Some readily recognisable melody variations from classical music and soundtracks push their way through powerful and crunch worthy string work, and the drumming teeters on that edge between frantic and driving. Martin Schirenc seems to be the main man in this project, lending his hand to most of the instruments, barring the drums for which the handiwork of Mike Groger has been employed. Feminine edges are given by the voice of Elena Shirenc in places, and Cannibal Corpse stage beater Rob Barret provides a solo in the track, “Woe to the Defeated”. It's taken a lot of courage to piece this album together, the jigsaw of classic epic and death seem to be made with jagged pieces, by their very nature, nothing quite fits together unless it's worked at. The effort was done for this CD and although there are bits that don't do well for me, I know that its purely a matter of taste. There are plenty of ace moments on this album to give me reason to overlook the less favourable sections. We are pleasured with violins and orchestral flurries of power alongside fabulously worked musicianship and composition that are iced with the gruff and angry voice that demands our focus on the subject matters of fantastical and otherworldly things. Choral additions frame it to make the already astounding throw of forceful musical art hit home, I can imagine this is a good one for the gym. A fun and entertaining album.
