Air
Moon Safari Virgin Find on Amazon Find on Amazon UK Sweetness from the nineties, some of you may remember the single from this classic electro album, the choral repetition of “Sexy Boy” being a famous line in a few ads at the time, as well as in the soundtrack for hit cult TV show, “Queer as Folk”. Do not be put off by the easy money made by a quality tune that got lucky, the rest of the album is even more fun, interesting, and it has a lot more depth. This was not a one hit wonder and packing band album. Not at all, in fact, this very release was mentioned in the 101 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die catalogue. The synthetic casualness of the smooth, and sonically aesthetically pleasing music is not something that comes easily. When working with waves, and computers, asking them to do “beautiful” is like asking a dog to meow. They simply have no concept of it, so we have to tell them, bit by bit. The well crafting organic sounding pads that are used by Air give the master work its delicate but sheer edge, their honed effects and voices grant shimmer and class. A cafe sensation drapes the music like a cloaking of rhythm and blues, fished out of the backwaters in some nostalgic dream and reciprocated nicely in the driving seat of this then modern age. Paving the way for a lot more experimental work from the likes of M83, Ulrich Schnauss, and the New Retro Wave which throws the 80s into overdrive, Air, alongside Jean Michel Jarre, Boards of Canada and perhaps even Tangerine Dream, have given rise to a sugary nectar breed of electro that does what we just wont be able to do without the old fashioned .. er . Microchip. The down tempo and space age music scene has changed a lot and yet seems to be exactly the same. Only when we take snapshots from many years ago, do we see the subtle evolution in the exploration of the human inner cosmos via the telescope of the digital sound effect. Nothing says mind food more than the tranquil and strangely dynamic motivations of music that creeps over the drone but never crashes the cliff-face. White horses poking their heads through the surface are enough sometimes. |
