We all know about the one where a man built his house on the sand, it didn't last very long! We need to dig deep and lay good foundations. If something's built to last, it is solid all the way down. Just look at a tree, imagine if it wasn't rooted down? One gust of wind and it's gone. If you've ever seen a tree that's been blown over, there's a large crater where the root-ball used to be, and if it's an old tree, there'll be many roots running off into the ground which usually are still buried. With these, it's possible for the tree to regrow. So when we want to be successful, we have to build solid foundations. These things can be taught from an early age, and it's never too late to learn either. If you have children, teach them these thinking techniques. Otherwise, just apply them to yourself!
The first and most important thing we need is confidence. This means an inner sense of optimism and awareness of one's own ability. Confidence is often earned through practice and praise. Being good at improving, fast learning, and happy to have a go all boil down to confidence. Fear, worry, anxiety, etc. all result from not enough confidence. There is nothing wrong with being a beginner, confident people own their rookie self and behave responsibly, remaining confident all the while. Confidence keeps us calm in tough situations and it helps us make those around us feel more comfortable. Willingness to learn is the next step. There's nothing worse for a developing mind or a person who wants to develop themselves than a dislike for learning. It's really hard to just pick up on everything we need to know by just watching, guessing, and listening to conversations. At some point, we have to go to the information directly and use it for ourselves. For people who are the most successful, information is gold. They want it, they want to be able to use it to make people's lives better. When we can do that, we are in demand. Understand that learning is a lifelong mission and the more we use our minds the more aware, conscious, and powerful we will be in life. The next thing we all need is a really strong work ethic. Knowing that ideas alone won't make us successful, we go and put them into use. If we are not able to put that particular idea to use then give it to someone who can. They'll remember it, and where it came from. Ripples may not come back, as the song says, but good intentions and well earned networks are invaluable. We want people to like us, and know we can be trusted to do a good job. Both qualities are needed at work, always be glad to be of service. So, times will get tough. It's never a rose garden and when it is, there will always be thorny bits. We have to be able to cope with pressure, stress, and tension. When we are in charge of our own direction and walking the talk, we become a magnet for leadership energy. It changes the way we look at the world and the people around us. Our responsibilities grow and we become more willing to fulfil our own potential. We need to be able to resist all the opposing forces. Nothing is working against us, but when we lift weights we work against them. This is what success is like, lifting weights. It might be difficult to continue, we might feel like quitting. We have to be the kind of person who knows these emotions are loose stones that if left, will crumble off. If we try to balance on them, we will fall. Coping mechanisms for stress are important. Finally, we have to be able to have good ideas. Combined with the confidence to see them through, the work ethic to put them into positive action, and a willingness to learn, we will be well on our way. Just one idea isn't enough, we need lots of them. Keep having great ideas, write them down, and always be on the lookout as to how they can be applied. Be part of a team, use other people's creativity to inspire your own. A good imagination is something we can all nurture through reading or daydreaming, and a mind for assembling ideas into workable notions can be learned too. All we need is a bit of common sense.
