Where better to explore the history of our universe than in Rochester Cathedral, one of the oldest large venues still standing in the UK. The 11th Century Romanesque design building has remained a cathedral for its entire history and has drawn characters and worshipers from the Kent and wider area for centuries. The footsteps that have echoed in those walls, the marriages, the funerals, christenings, and fiery sermons, it’s all still there, resonating in the light. You’d have to travel several light years at faster than light travel to see it, though. Maybe one day. Until then, light can be used to show what we know in a more down-to-Earth way
The light display and multimedia experience producers Luxmuralis have worked all over the world. They’ve entertained awestruck crowds in the USA and Germany plus at St. Paul’s Cathedral, The Tower of London, and Westminster Abbey in the UK. A theme of history, storytelling, and luminous moving images captures the audience and enchants as the epic tales are brought to life in vivid detail. Artistic director, Peter Walker, has designed a visual and audio once-in-a-lifetime journey through history via the walls of Rochester’s ancient landmark. Exploring the human concept of time and our relationship to it through our culture, our beliefs, and our hopes and fears, the experience can inspire deep thought on a level fitting for each participant. Be it a child or a philosophy doctor, the concept of the clock is big enough for everyone. This is the fifth year in a row that Luxmuralis have visited the iconic Rochester Cathedral; last year’s display showed off the delights of Anglo-Saxon artwork and manuscripts. A wider scope this year, taking on time itself is bound to leave a few of us feeling fascinated and factual. The lightshow starts today, 30th September and finishes up on Saturday 4th October.
