Best-known for a life well-lived in Plymouth, a naval town on the South coast of England, Beryl Cook is highly regarded for her depictions of fleeting happiness. She truly wanted to bring out the best of life with her long life of painting, and her vibrant, colourful images seem to always capture something humanly magical in the everyday interaction between individuals. Picturing our uniqueness and mannerisms synonymous to ourselves alone, Beryl Cook immortalised joy where-ever she went. Beryl Cook was a well-known entity in Plymouth, for over four decades she was there painting things she saw in everyday yet one-off situations. Perhaps if you saw her somewhere nearby, you’d secretly hope to show up in one of the images. I’m sure many had their wishes granted, although her characters are designed to be illustratory rather than life-like. Her cosy and friendly faces did away with the worries and traumas that sometimes are written over our expressions and posture, she waited for those moments of freedom brought about by ideas or circumstance that washed all those trouble lines away. Where some critics dismissed her work as somewhat pedestrian and more fitting to children’s stories, what they missed was her devotion to the emotional story. Her choice colours that fly off the canvas and the simplified facial features that draw all the attention to meaningful expression, Beryl Cook’s painting style explored the depths of social situation and its joyous meanings to everyday people. Rather than a high-street caricature, Beryl Cook was able to distil the essential energetic transactions from the dilution of the noisy and busy world. After her death in 2008, aged 81, the work of Beryl Cook has enjoyed a continual appraisal and a building base of international admirers. As the world shifts to appreciate the work of prominent women on an equal footing to men, artists like Beryl Cook are rightfully enjoying a cultural boost when it comes to recognition and promotion. The Plymouth-based narrative means that her cultural footprint is still making a huge impression for the entire Devonshire area. Marking the centenary of her birth and fifty years since she first established herself as a serious Plymouth-based artist, Plymouth is holding a celebratory exhibition in honour of their patron saint of fun. Called Beryl Cook: Pride and Joy, the show at The Plymouth Box will highlight the radical and mood-changing artist’s narrative and passion in all her vibrant scheme. With dozens and dozens of famous works to her name, and plenty more unsung heroes, you’re sure to see something you recognise while finding out about how brilliant she truly was. What emotion would you spend a lifetime of artistry capturing? The exhibition starts Saturday the 24th of January and finishes up on 31st of May.
