The scene is almost ingrained into our generational subconscious. Picture it, the fire is aglow. Flames rise from the oscillating embers and cast light and shade on the soot-covered chimney mouth. The warmth radiates from the hearth into the wide-open room. Perhaps a solitary lamp shines stoically in the corner, next to a half-finished glass of garnet coloured Valpolicella Doc Ripasso Superiore. The inner warmth of the fermented grapes mirroring the glow of the firelight, lending temperature and solace from within. The Valpolicella waits patiently, its carmine depths holding unspoken stories, ready to loosen the tongue and unfasten the mind. How many times have we been here before? If only we could remember, the nights, the lifetimes, the dreams and the stories all combine into the archetypal experience. As inhibitions recede like river tides and the dreamworld begins to wake from its slumbering whispers, the mind is ready to connect to pen and brush with a free-fall flow of idea and nuance. Imaginary processes start to align with the real world, ideas and questions flow in liquid sips of distinctive flavour and bite. What’s that? The doorbell rings, a gentle chime that feels like the turning of a page. At the window, your dear friend grins, holding aloft a Sevato Chianti whose dark glass seems to hum with unspoken ideas. With another mind to converse with and form ideas according to their character, the flow of wine and ideas are set for an evening of enchantment and movement. The persistence of the moment lasts through the ages. As two modern faces sit on twenty-first century fabrics while discussing modern themes and up-to-date symbolism, the echoes of time repeat onward into the deep past. Wine and fire, conversation and the sharing of dreams, these things transcend civilisation itself. From the first time an inventive human deliberately fermented grape juice around ten thousand years ago to the modern day, we have transformed fruit, yeast, and water into an endless variety of bottles that continue to inspire imagination. The traditional drink has helped people to build fantastic legacies of narrative and story that have been present companions over the centuries, representing social and natural phenomena and circumstance. Perhaps the Greeks were the first to personify the experience of drink, good times, and friendly conversation. Along with his Roman counterpart Bacchus, Dionysus became well-known for being the god of drink, ecstasy, and liberation. This combination is integral to the blessing of balance and moderation. When you’ve had the right amount and the people around you are good to you, the world is safe and you have everything you need, this blessed situation was the work of this highly favoured figure. Otherwise known as Eleutherios, Dionysus or Bacchus was the gatekeeper of self-restraint and self-consciousness. Picture crowds of people, with garlands of flowers, musical instruments, poetic stages, and gatherings around various kinds of fire. When you had his blessing, he was able to shed the shield of social nervousness and grooming that caused us to behave in a restricted and unliberated manner. As the honoured patron of all joy and of emotional chaos, the deity carried a warning that excess and disrespect for the ritual could unravel before your eyes, bringing misfortune and trouble. With the symbol for this figure being grapes and vines plus lions and leopards, it’s clear there was a dangerous side to invoking this mystical power. So they could harness the power of this force in a safe and social way, both Greeks and Romans had festivals for Bacchus and Dionysus. The Dionysian Mysteries and Bacchanalia were festivals of wine, music, dance, poetry, and theatre. These creative and expressive exploits helped to funnel the energy of liberation and excitement into productive, artistic, and social outlets. By giving structure, purpose, pleasant experience, and shared stories, the drunken crowd could remain cordial and together, without the opportunity to squabble over politics or relationships. By framing the event in the positive, with the mental liberation gave space to create and dream rather than become emotional and irascible. It goes further than tradition and social good practice. The grapeseed, a bitter little nuisance that, if bitten into, ruins a perfectly delicious, sweet fruit. When planted in the ground and tended with care and consideration, it becomes a vine. This vine can spread across walls and fences, trees, and hedges. When its big enough and it has lasted a few winters, it will produce its own delicious, sweet fruit. These in turn can be harvested, pressed, and turned into a glorious wine that gives joy and passion to entire communities. This act of creation from such an objectionable tasting seed to something so enjoyable that people will queue for a glass, after waiting months or even years, is a direct mirror to the human act of creativity. Like the vine, an idea must be sheltered through its winters before it can bear fruit worth sharing. Be it boredom or the need to fix a problem, the grape seed is the issue, and the creativity is the cure. When we’re finished, what we have is not just a cure from the grape seed but a gift that we can distribute far and wide. So, as you sit with your friend, and the firelight flickers gently on your faces, remember how ancient this ceremony is. As you go to the kitchen to get a third bottle, maybe a casual Eventus Rosso, remember the spiritual and creative journey that transcends the glass. Maybe bring out some poetry books to recite, a film to watch, or find a decent show. As you sip and think, talk and share, perhaps putting your minds together on a creative plan, something to improve your lives or simply make things a bit more exciting for a while. Let the creative symbolism of the wine making process inspire you to change the world in some small and personal way.
