People are resistant to change, we're all creatures of habit and it takes extra work to change those habits. Most of the time, we are all too tired to do that extra work. There's enough going on without the need to change. This is why often necessary changes are imposed on us. Think of this recent outbreak of Covid-19. If the authorities in the hardest-hit places were to sit back and let people choose to self-isolate, how many would ignore the advice? There are those who would prefer to put their trust in a shouty bald guy on YouTube rather than leagues of independently trained and independently thinking scientists. In some respects, it's their right to put their trust in who-ever they want however in other respects, there has to be a point where law takes over. We can't just do what we want, it protects us from harm.
This brings us to hard power revolution. This is where force is used to bring about change in society. Hard power is inherently destructive, it ruins lives, often leaves people dead, and it breaks down the routine in favour of a new one. Perhaps there are times when hard power is the only choice, a last resort to put an end to perpetual suffering. More often though, soft power can apply the right changes without doing any harm. Soft power is the art of creating new systems and routines to replace the old which society gladly adopts. This is done through communication, literature, art, music, and philosophy. We know what we want, we know what's right, and if that can be focussed on an idea that works, then it will manifest - with a little help from an innovator. What do we need to think about when innovating for society? What processes matter to the general population so that our work can be successful? How do we have to think? Your idea needs to work for one person and a million people with the same results. We all start small, where are you going to stop though? Could it be feasible to implement your idea across the entire world? There are costs, there is labour, there are cultural differences that really matter to people, there is the need to trust other people to do their job to your standard. Can you scale your idea? Would you be able to see this through, will the arithmetic add up, can you handle all that responsibility? People need to feel connected to your idea. In order for the idea to grow and be adopted, the people involved all have to have a sense of belonging. Can they interact and co-exist with your work? If your idea evolves in the wild, with input from its users, implementers, and its creator as one force, it will be more easily adopted by those involved. Your work belongs to everyone once it starts being used. Look around you, see what there is an abundance of. Make that your starting point. We all pay dearly for requiring expensive ingredients for our products. The rarer and more sought-after a thing is, the higher its price. We ultimately pass this on to the customer and so only certain people can reach our product. In order for something to be accessible for the general population, it has to be able to make use of abundant things. It has to be affordable. Talk to other innovators. This can't be just your idea, for something to extend into society as a whole then it has to become something outside of the individual. Of course, your precise product is irreplaceable and unique, no-one can touch it. The thinking behind it though, that belongs to everyone who appreciates your idea. They want to help implement it for the good of those around them. After-all, it was for the good of society in the first place wasn't it? Be transparent. It's essential that society can see your process, understand what you do and why, and know what their role is. Don't be shy about making money, being good at something, and don't try to keep secrets. Trust is vital for populations to want to associate with you or your work. You need to be able to be there for people to examine until their heart is content. It doesn't feel nice, tough. You're going to have to get used to it. What is the point of your idea for the user? Is it going to benefit the user in a way that ultimately makes it worthwhile? If your idea benefits society but not the user first-hand then it probably won't take off. People want incentives and they need their own reason. We have to think of both things at once. What does it do for them, what does it do for all. They need not be the same thing, but they can be as well. Finally, this brings us to the ultimate goal of your idea. What is it actually going to do? Can you sustain it and can it sustain itself in society? How will you merge the doing good for everyone theme with being able to put it to use? What is the ultimate goal of the idea? In what ways does your idea benefit society? Are you sure it will benefit society or are you just guessing based on your own political ideas? These things matter the most because if you implement your process well the result will change the world for good or for worse. If we can be a good manager for ourselves, make reasonable demands and issue reasonable rewards, things will flow more smoothly. We need to be consistent, and we have to nurture trust. This requires us to be predictable in quality and in availability. We have to be able to put down the games and pick up the pen. Not only this, we also have to make sure that time is taken to do things properly and well. Make sure that you have the self-control needed to switch off the entertainment and make space for work. Genuine happiness is like a garden, it must be cultivated and weeded regularly. So a friend of mine asked me what to write in their press release. As a music journalist and editor of The Electro Review as well as Alternative Fruit, I am sent a large number of them. Having seen seen good ones, bad ones, and excellent ones, this has enabled me to figure out what it is that makes the difference. Here I will explain what it is that makes a press release excellent in my professional opinion. After-all it's these excellent ones that make the best articles and therefore have the highest chance of being picked up. If your music is written about then you have something to show for your work other than the work itself. It legitimises your project, even if the review is terrible. Most importantly, it enables more people to find out about your work and become fans.
Something that may not be possible to change once it's time to write the press release is the title of the music. The thing is, music writers want to write about something that will be interesting for their readers. Their job is to get as many people reading their journal as possible. So if your record is called mashed potatoes then people who like mashed potatoes will be the most likely to read about it. Think about this when naming your work, avoid things that don't resonate with many people. The first and truly most important part is you have to provide the music. I have been sent requests for review and a link to where I can buy the songs. Seriously, this will not get anywhere with most writers. We are sent so much music, and we are doing this to earn money, so buying your album won't be on our priority list. Send a free copy, you have to be able to trust us to not share it. Ripping off our artists isn't part of that. So we need a few bits a pieces to build an article we are happy to share. In this modern age of next-to-free internet media, there are a number of ways we can improve an article. Of course we need a picture, some kind of image that is related. If not the album cover then a picture of the musicians is absolutely necessary. But, there are other things we can now include that make our writing more valuable to the readers. Links to social profiles are really handy for people who want to get closer to their musicians. A fan nowadays isn't just the proud owner of a t-shirt and a few records, they are connected and they interact. Most active musicians have a social account or two and most of these also have an official website also. As well, a lot of people use their social accounts as their official website and the platforms tend to offer just the right options to make this possible. These need to be available in your press release. Us writers can go hunting for them on Google however they're not always up there in the top results. If we can't see them on page 1 of Google then we probably won't include them. So make sure they are in the press release! Musicians often have accounts on music sharing websites and platforms. Soundcloud and Mixcloud are great because they allow embeds. This means writers can put a bit of code on their article which allows the music player to appear preloaded with the relevant tracks. Bandcamp too offer this option and these go on and let listeners pay for the music. If the music is on Amazon or Apple then these links are wonderful as those companies reward media creators when readers make a purchase. Most importantly is the story. Why should we listen to your album or your single? What gives you the right to put music in my head? It sounds harsh but this is what people are thinking when offered something new. We need to know that we are safe and in the hands of someone who is on our side. Someone who wants to create art will have a lot of feelings and thoughts behind their project. We need to know what these are. We don't want to know that your formulaic track with lyrics that you took from the yellow pages is worth hearing. There needs to be a humanitarian element to it, even if its a fictional story-line. No-one said it has to be a true story. Writers want to link to things online and offer real value to their readers. This means that any information about the artist and their music making process can be used to really improve an article. If you tell us what obscure instruments were used or what technique was used when writing the over-dubs, or any other useful snippet of high-brow trivia, it can throw a good read into orbit. We love to get knee deep in the world of our musicians and by offering easy avenues into the thick of it, those who will walk can. Speaking as a reader, you need to get our attention. The thing is, when creators see that something works at grabbing attention, everyone else starts using the same technique. It's no longer novel and original so us readers stop paying attention to it. This means originality is really important. Writers have to read first, so once we have our attention grabbed, put us in our element with everything we need to create something of real value to our readers. It's not going to guarantee a write-up but it gets you over the half-way line. Then, just fire out as many copies of your press release as possible to as many writers and media outlets as you know about. It is the numbers game, however the odds are increased because of your method. One final thing, when you write to people asking them to write about you, you are asking for a favour. Remember to be as polite as possible and consider the fact that this is work for them as it should be for you. Popping up on someone's Facebook page with a sudden request when their website clearly has an email address to use isn't going to win favour. If you're already connected on there and have been talking already, then fine. However remember to be formal and not presume that the writer will do what you ask. You are asking them for a favour, remember that. If they do write about you, the least you can do in return is share what they produce for you with everyone you know. It's important to remember that writers are in the business of writing, and if their journal isn't a business then it's making them happy anyway. Once you have a guiding light in your desired profession you can be ushered in the right direction. Find A Community: You're not alone. There are people like you who love doing what you do. They may even be interested in going professional as well. These people often group together in little communities that have established meetings. And if you honestly can't find one, maybe broaden your reach to similar things or perhaps just start your own. It will be a difficult adventure but you can do it. Google's Good, But What Else? The natural bias from the algorithm will always give us a particular set of instructions and answers. This can't be helped really, so the best thing to do is Google then go to the library. Even if you just snap up some bargain books from the Amazon second hand listings or something, finding many avenues of thought about your subject can and will help you build a much greater picture of the world you're trying to break into. Communicate Your Path With Your Peers: These people in the same game as you who maybe have been doing it longer are still just people. The chances are that if you get friendly with them then they'll be able to help you out with certain things. It might be that you've a really bad habit that you didn't realise was impairing your work. You may not realise that although your pictures of crows are near perfect, there are enough crow paintings to wall-paper St Paul's. You can still decide you don't agree! Figure Out Where You Have Work To Do You've not been doing this at a professional standard before and no-ones been worried how excellent you are before. In social circles it's okay to be mediocre or have an off-day. Not any more. You have to be able to maintain a degree of professionalism even when it's not in your immediate impetus. This needs lots of polishing on several aspects of your main skill and a whole list of other skills you will need in order to truly thrive in a commercial environment. Make A Plan So you have clear guidance and a list of things to work on, you have a community behind you and friends in the job who are willing to point you out to things when necessary. You need to manage your own time and direction. None of these people can do this for you. No book or instruction video can make you get up and do your work. Learning new skills and putting them into action takes a lot of energy. The brain has to create new pathways that maybe it hadn't even heard of before. There's a lot to it and you'll find it can't be done over-night. Take your steps and know which way they are taking you. Feel Good About It No this is not a drag, it's a beautiful way of life that you have earned through your own hard work. You still have to put the hours in but they're hours doing what you enjoy. You don't get to have fun all the time, but we're adults now aren't we? We play games when the children visit. This is a good move for you and as long as you remain on the path of self-improvement there will be nothing that can stop you from advancing. Maybe we focus on the results we desire and forget about enjoying the journey. Because we don't have everything we want yet doesn't go to say we have nothing we want. We've already earned so much. Sharing common beliefs or traditions help us to bond as communities. The mindset of the magic-believer can be seen as a token of unity for those who share it. A sense of common wisdom and ideals can help not only bring people together but they serve to inspire acts which can truly change people's lives. People who believe in magic are less bound to conventional ways of thinking. There is an element of excitement about everything as magical process and communication can appear in any situation. This invites a loose set of criteria for what reality can be and opens up new and sometimes ingenious ways of perceiving what really is in the world. The rich culture that is part of the story which accompanies magical thinking is a continual source of inspirational characters and metaphorical events. Each culture has its own strain of magical thought and some of this has escaped the shadows to become truly religious. Other beliefs and systems still remain on the outside and serve to test the boundaries of what others will believe and practice. This ultimately creates a vast network of interlinked thoughts and structures of world view which can be used to enrich us all and help us to better understand each other. When we are open to magical process as something that is possible it breaks down many of the boundaries that others naturally have. This gives the imagination much more room to flourish and behave in ways that other people won't have been able to explain. When we are open to the natural course of magical processes we are less likely to dismiss certain cues and psychological agendas which point to the reality of a situation. Perhaps most importantly of all is it gives us a sense of power and control. We feel that we are able to adjust the world around us to suit our immediate needs. We sense that we as people can truly affect the world around us. So many times when we take the proper route we find ourselves up against serious walls. So we decide to use methods that others are not conscious of to get the little bit of control we desperately desire. It helps us to cope with being a part of an often complex and chaotic world. The background prepares the world for the work, what the history of the team says to the customer or the audience will produce a mental construct and context which defines perception and willingness to co-operate. The story has to be a positive one, if it's not then it will produce a sense of repulsion that ultimately causes failure. You never know what's going to happen. In computers and machines we can predict what will happen and when something breaks we generally know what to do about it. Teams made of individuals do not behave in this way. Sometimes things go wrong or turn out different to the plan and we simply have to accept it. Learning from the methods and contingencies will of-course help improve the team however it's not always the fault of the team if the end result is not what was expected. Imagine building a well-researched product, marketing it to the people who you know through research want it, but it doesn't catch on? You did your best and there's nothing wrong with it, it's just unlucky. Complex systems can appear pointless and full of bloated bureaucracy. We sometimes see offices and names and have no idea what or who they are. For a team to function properly, the whole must be aware of itself. The team-members and the customer or market must be aligned with the purpose of the team. We don't have the time to consider everything for ourselves and find out what something is for. We feel more comfortable and more able to produce good results when we know what we are doing in relation to everything else and why. Everything changes, the individuals in our team change their mood and energy levels day by day, the trends in the world change day by day, the amount of interest in a particular thing changes day by day. We can't expect things to stay the same and we have to thrive on uncertainty. Again, this is why complex systems differ from mechanical or digital ones. It's exciting to see what happens next, and provided we use good business sense and logic we can navigate the fluctuating nature of the world. Interaction is fundamental to the performance of a team. Unfortunately, some people prefer to be competitive and will try to put themselves in a position of being above others. Other people are submissive and will allow others to take higher status. This is unhealthy in social situations however when at work then we have to make the most of the condition of our employees. Try to identify who wants to be on top and who doesn't mind being below in order to best maintain a workable flow. First impressions make a huge impact on our future relationship with a person or business. Then again, if an incident supersedes the general normality of behaviour then this too can affect all future perceptions. Being disrespectful is one of those things that other people cannot stand. Customers do not want to deal with marketplaces that pose a risk of being disrespectful. Of course, if a customer starts being a nuisance, it's only right to be assertive with them or if an employee isn't adhering to practice standards, again there has to be an intervention. The key issue is respect. Employees and customers want to feel safe in your environment, as a creative entity you or your company has to nourish this positive exchange of social currency.
It's always a good idea to ask about well-being. Before assuming how a person is feeling we should ask them. We are likely to be more accurate this way which will make us more able to work with it. By identifying what makes people unhappy or distressed, when we discover what people's concerns and worries are, we can work to directly remedy this. By asking for well-being information regularly, we can keep on the pulse of the emotional state of what and who we are working with. Always make sure that customers and employees can be honest about you. You are a driving force in your creative adventure and its your interactions that make things happen. If we can ask for honest feedback that is measured and thought-out with reference to actual events then we can have a clear picture of what we do well and what we could work on. A short-coming is an opportunity to those who haven't learned it yet. Can you confidently listen to and then work to reduce your short-comings as well as your strengths? Criticism and blame work to put people off, they create a negative perception of the person communicating it. There are natural reasons for all of our behaviours and methods, by using critical or shaming language to highlight a difference in opinion or standard we stand apart from the whole unduly. It is better to inquire as to differences on an equal standing, offering examples and theory to express the opposing ideas. Once someone is shown in a calm and rational way that their method or thinking can be improved, they'll not feel as rejected or belittled as if they were blamed or shamed. Remember that the other person is just as human as you are. They may not have the same political ideas or the same dress sense, they may not like the same music but they haven just as deep an experience of their life as you have of yours. When dealing with other people we have to take into account for the vast universe of space within them that contains an eternity of memories and feelings, plans and dreams. If you throw a stone into it then you might get splashed. Even if they are part of a rival company they are still on your side. We all want the best for the world and for each other. These people are not your enemy to be psyched out like at a football match. So many companies and artists work together to bring a wide range of ideas and services to the marketplace. Art and creative industry is exactly the same. The me first mentality can keep you from making great connections and cooperative networks with those who can actually help you and expose you to more customers. By treating people in the way you want to be treated by your friends then we can expect to make a lot of them. There will be times when you're treated unfairly and when someone doesn't show you the respect you give them, it's no matter, the people who are worth your time and message are just as revolted as you are. |
